Stefen's from a world where magic horses sometimes choose psychic boys and girls and force them into politics. Stefen, however, is NOT a psychic boy— at least, not any more. He can use Bardic emotion-sharing and is really good at music, is the lifebonded of god's most pathetic wet cat of a war hero, and is definitely nothing else at all. (This is a lie, and I am going to be given Stefen memories back from his past life interspersed, so watch out for flying spoilers. They're really easy to get used if you want them, though, since they're 35 year old books.)

Stefen is a Master Bard despite his young age, and if playing or singing, it is not only gorgeous but includes the Bardic Gift—essentially a form of projective empathy; he can make you feel things or gain impulses due to his music. Born and raised on the streets, Stef has lived the last nine years of his life in the Bardic college on the Palace grounds, where he got a reputation for sleeping around with boys; this (and his incredibly strong talent) earned him the ire of his fellow students. His roommate Medren introduced Stef to his incredibly beautiful, tragic, and lonely Uncle Vanyel. Stef fell instantly in love.
